About
This is the website of Wietse van der Werf, an ocean conservation activist who works for the protection of marine wildlife and ecosystems in European seas.
Wietse served onboard the vessel M/V Steve Irwin with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society as ship's carpenter and engineer from 2008-2010. He crewed during two Antarctic whale defense campaigns and on an expedition to halt illegal bluefin tuna poachers in the Mediterranean Sea. He is one of the founders of the European marine conservation organisation The Black Fish.
Wietse has written for various publications, including The Guardian, Red Pepper, Het Parool and The Indypendent on ocean conservation related issues. He is vegan and lives and works mostly from Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
