Our legacy: a dead ocean?
Our oceans are dying at an incredible rate. A scientific report was published today which shows that our oceans are not facing a number of different threats but that many aspects of human activity such as overfishing, habitat destruction, pollution and climate change are all contributing to a giant unstoppable force of destruction. Why direct action is the bluefin tuna's last hope
Yesterday we freed several hundred illegally caught bluefin tuna, just a week after our ship the Steve Irwin left Malta. ..that the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has now certified the Ross Sea Antarctic toothfish fishery as 'sustainable' even though it is still regarded by scientists and the industry as a highly damaging fishery? Others damaging fisheries which were recently awarded 'sustainable' status include Antarctic krill and tuna and swordfish off the US coast. (Source: The Guardian, Jan 2011)
